Overview
Hours of Work: 35 nominal weekly hours. We actively encourage agile/flexible working in line with the delivery requirements of each of our roles. As this is a technician role, this role will be based on Campus.
Responsible to: Workshop Senior Technician
Primary Place of Work: ASU London β Temporary based in Canada Water until July. Then moving permanently to Clerkenwell.

Your role
This is an exciting opportunity for a Technician to join the ASU London team in delivering innovative, relevant and hands-on engineering higher education β working closely with supervising technicians and academic colleagues in the maintenance and operation of our Makerspaces. This is an important role in ensuring successful delivery of our undergraduate programmes with the vast majority of our learning achieved through real-life projects, designed and co-delivered with our industry partners.
Your varied role will include working with other technicians to advise and assist academic staff and students on available:
- Digital Manufacturing (3D Printing, laser cutters, CNC)
- Electrical and electronics kits, Assembly and fault finding of electric circuits
- Coding of microcontrollers
- Workshop machinery (Pillar drill, sanders, Lathe, mill etc.)
You will provide exceptional technical support, instruction and practical advice to facilitate the delivery of projects, and teaching, in the ASU London Makerspaces with assistance from other technicians, advising on use and techniques. You will resolve day-to-day technical issues both informally on a one-to-one basis and as part of group demonstrations and ongoing induction activities, such as:
- Setting up and maintaining electronic equipment, diagnosing and repairing faults where possible
- Supporting the student experience and contributing to the practical application of risk
- General maintenance of relevant Makerspaces and equipment, including maintaining stocks of relevant consumables and equipment
- Assisting colleagues in the purchase, delivery and installation of any new equipment
- Assist in the implementation and monitoring of existing safety protocols ensuring the safety of staff and students including the running of safety inductions
- Partnering with colleagues to generate a positive βcan doβ attitude within the Makerspaces to enable our students to achieve their goals
- Working closely with the academic team as a member of the broader team to participate in planning the future development of the Makerspaces and learning activities, identifying opportunities for improvements
About you
For this role you will have:
Skills and Knowledge- Experience of working in a teaching, or other customer-facing environment
- A proven problem-solving and technical capability and the ability to engage constructively with students and staff whilst under pressure
- Demonstrable communication and interpersonal skills that enable you to work effectively and build successful relationships at all levels
- Ability to undertake practical demonstrations, face to face presentations and one to one mentoring and coaching to facilitate understanding and develop the skills and capabilities of both staff and students within the makerspace
- A willingness to be hands-on and involved in activities that may not be within the role on a day-to-day basis β essential in a start-up environment
- BTEC level 4 or HNC or apprenticeship in Electrical/Electronics/Mechanical/Manufacturing engineering discipline or have equivalent practical work experience
- Essential: Have experience in 3 of the 5 areas: Workshop machinery (Pillar drill, sanders, Lathe, mill etc.), Digital Manufacturing (3D Printing, laser cutters, CNC), electrical and electronics kits, assembly and fault finding of electric circuits, Coding of microcontrollers
- Willingness and enthusiasm to learn all other areas
- Relevant Health and Safety experience
- Experience in supporting or working in Makerspaces or workshop spaces
- Experience in training with workshop machines e.g. Bandsaw, Lathe, and power tools
- Experience with CAM operated equipment e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters, CNCs
- Coding (Arduino, Python or C++)
- CAD software (Solidworks or Fusion)
- Assembly and fault finding of electric circuits
- Maintenance and serving of workshop machinery

Core terms:
- Working days per annum: 260
