An opportunity exists for a Research Assistant/Research Associate at the University of Cambridge to study strategies for ocean carbon removal. The successful applicant will join the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Centre for Climate Repair in Cambridge under the primary supervision of Prof. John Taylor from 1 September 2026 or by negotiation.
The successful candidate will use OceanBioME and Oceananigans to study the coupled interactions between ocean physics, biogeochemistry, and kelp (macroalgae). The overall aim of the project is to quantify the potential for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and sequestration associated with kelp forests (ocean reforestation) and seaweed farms and to identify potential impacts on biogeochemical cycles and natural primary production and carbon export.
The successful candidate will join the Atmosphere and Ocean Dynamics group in DAMTP and will work closely with Prof. Taylor and other members of the project team to accomplish these goals. Experience with ocean modelling and the Oceananigans model is desirable.
The successful candidate will be expected to plan and manage their own research while working closely with others. They must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external collaborations. The post holder may also be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, develop student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.
Closing date: 15 July 2026. Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance. Salary: £33,002 to £46,049 per annum.
