Control Engineer in Milton Keynes

Eclipse Power Networks Ltd are an OFGEM licenced Electricity Independent Distribution Network Operator working within the UK energy industry. We design, own, operate and maintain extra high, high and low voltage electricity distribution network assets, providing power connections to residential, industrial, renewable and commercial customers across the UK.

Job Purpose: This is a key role for managing our live assets that have been energised and adopted by Eclipse Power Networks. The role requires a strong emphasis on the technical, operational and safety requirements for connections at all voltage levels up to 132kV so electrical distribution knowledge is key. The role is part of a customer focussed team to control and operate the network within a 24/7/365 environment.

Main responsibilities will include:

• Safe and efficient control and operation of our operational networks.
• Ensure all operations carried out on our network are done so in line with the Distribution Safety Rules and supporting procedures.
• Reviewing and consent of switching schedules, Permit to Work, Sanction for Test and limitation of Access.
• Monitor SCADA system and respond to alarms and abnormal conditions.
• Dispatching Operations staff or O&M contracted services to attend to network fault.
• Reviewing Risk Assessments and Method Statements associated with work being undertaken on our network/at our sites.
• Provide Control Engineer support to our on-call incident managers as part of an out of hours rota structure.
• Ownership of the Approval to Energise process in line with the internal stage and gate project delivery process ensuring networks are safe to energise and come under Distribution Safety Rules.
• Ensure key documents are maintained and kept up to date such as BCA’s, Site Responsibility Schedules and Operational Diagrams.
• Maintain accurate records and logs of network activity, including abnormal conditions.
• Liaise with upstream DNO/TO and downstream customers for cross boundary management activities, including implementation of RISSPs.
• Communicate effectively with customers, service providers and local authorities.
• Coordinate closely with the HSEQ team to ensure all direct and subcontract staff operate in a safe and controlled manner.
• Provide coaching and mentoring to develop trainees throughout the business.
• Take the lead role in adverse weather events ensuring the network, resources, personnel and internal administration staff are prepared for the event.
• Monitor, maintain and report monthly KPIs relevant to Network Control activity.
• Carry out SCADA commissioning (remote end) for newly constructed EHV networks.
• Create, review and update policy and procedures associated to Network Control.
• Report defects, faults and operational dispatch requirements into the EAM System.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

Essential:

• Electrical Distribution, Transmission or Renewables background.
• Appropriate engineering discipline qualification (Degree/HNC/HND).
• Operational experience at AP or SAP level for HV/EHV networks.
• Excellent Safety, Health, Environment appreciation and fully conversant with all Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) including DSR’s, to ensure the safe operation of the network.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• Computer literacy with the ability to use Microsoft Office applications and tools.
• Ability to prioritise work activity to deliver business and customer/client needs.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Knowledge of the UK Distribution Code and Grid Code.

Desirable:

• Project/programme/activity management including financial responsibility for delivery at time and cost.
• Excellent Safety, Health, Environment appreciation and fully conversant with all Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) including DSR’s, to ensure the safe operation of the network.
• Knowledge of legislation applicable to owning operating and maintaining distribution networks.
• Team working including across the wider business.
