An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, positive and driven Senior Gardener to further develop and maintain an interesting garden near Woodstock in Oxfordshire. The garden extends to 7 acres of both formal and informal gardens. The Senior Gardener will report directly to the owner and will be solely responsible for the day‑to‑day running of the gardens with the help of additional staff. The successful candidate will ensure that the gardens are maintained to exceptional levels. They should have demonstrable skills in all areas of gardening and be comfortable with the responsibilities that are associated with the role of Senior Gardener. They should also be able to work independently whilst ensuring all necessary plans and projects are completed on time and within budget. The garden aims to operate organically.
Key Responsibilities
- High quality maintenance of borders and other planting
- Formulating and executing plans for successful pest control
- Irrigation management
- Organic fertiliser application
- Pruning and managing fruit, vegetables and cut flowers to provide a continuous supply to the main house
- Maintenance and evolution of lawns, hedges, climbing plants, ponds and stream
- Assist in the design and implementation of large‑scale projects within the estate
Qualifications and Experience
- Proven experience working in a large garden at a similar level and/or relevant horticultural qualifications
- Excellent eye for detail and ability to manage contractual staff while maintaining a friendly, positive working environment
- A highly positive attitude and a passion for gardening with sound plant knowledge
- Clean driving licence and experience operating machinery such as chainsaws, tractors, etc.
- Experience with organic gardening techniques
An attractive 3 bedroom cottage is available within the estate as part of the role. This is a full‑time role (40 hours per week) with expected flexibility of occasional weekend watering and security duties. Salary: Competitive salary by negotiation. References will be required.
