An excellent opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and self-motivated Sole Gardener to take responsibility for the maintenance and ongoing development of the beautiful gardens surrounding a stunning Georgian Manor House near Wetherby, Yorkshire. This is a full-time position offering either live-in or live-out, depending on the candidate’s preference and circumstances.
The rich and diverse private 5-acre garden blends traditional English garden elements with naturalistic and productive areas, creating a setting of both beauty and horticultural interest. Surrounding the house are beautifully planted, wraparound borders, filled with a variety of different species of roses, clematis, and herbaceous perennials. A well-established wisteria covers part of the front and side elevation and a courtyard at the back of the house includes container grown olive trees and a mature fig. The garden also includes two large formal lawns, overlooked on one side by a magnificent, mature beech tree. The woodland area is rich in seasonal bulbs such as snowdrops, bluebells, and daffodils and is centred around a striking Cedar of Lebanon, with winding walkways framed by mature evergreens.
A dedicated kitchen garden is currently used for storing and maintaining ornamental plants temporarily and will be an exciting feature for the new Gardener to restore to a fully productive kitchen garden after November. This space has eight raised beds, including a rhubarb section, with plans to supply fresh produce to the main house once again. Adjacent to this is a well-stocked fruit cage containing strawberries, as well as red, white, and blackcurrants, along with other soft fruits. Features also include an ancient orchard providing a sense of history and seasonal charm, set in a wildflower meadow bringing biodiversity. A tranquil Koi Pond, 1 acre of paddocks, stable block with chickens and tennis court are set within the grounds. The garden is maintained in a mostly organic manner, with the exception of selective weed control on gravel pathways.
The successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of garden care across the gardens and grounds. The Sole Gardener will be expected to manage the garden to a high horticultural standard while also bringing their own knowledge and initiative to the role. This is a hands-on position requiring practical skills, and the ability to plan and manage seasonal tasks independently. Duties will include weeding, pruning, mulching, lawn care, planting, pest and disease control, and general garden upkeep. Experience with garden machinery is essential, and the ability to carry out basic maintenance of tools and equipment is expected. Additional duties include feeding the chickens on a daily basis and the two cats when the owners are away.
The ideal candidate will have either a recognised horticultural qualification and/or experience in a similar private garden setting. A broad plant knowledge, confidence in managing various garden environments, and a genuine passion for gardening are key. The role would suit someone who takes pride in their work, has excellent attention to detail, and is comfortable working alone while maintaining clear communication with the property owners.
Accommodation can be provided in the same village, if required, in the form of a well-presented two-bedroom cottage, which includes a small garden and dedicated parking. Please note that council tax and utility bills are the responsibility of the employee. The accommodation is suitable for a partner, children, and pets, offering a comfortable and family-friendly living environment. Due to the rural location of the estate, a full driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential.
