Overview
A unique vacancy has arisen for an experienced and skilled Sole Gardener to take ownership of a stunning garden based near Haywards Heath, West Sussex. This full time, permanent position would suit an energetic and knowledgeable plants person with a creative eye.
About the Estate and Gardens
The privately owned estate spans over 200-acres which includes farmland, woodland and 8-acres of gardens. Surrounding the Arts and Crafts country house, the formal gardens include seasonally planted courtyards, herbaceous borders, informal and formal plantings mirroring the formal and informal lawns. Also within the grounds is a walled garden, a glasshouse which is used for plant propagation and growing and will require management by the successful applicant. There is also fruit and specimen tree planting as well as an ancient orchard.
Responsibilities
- Working closely with the Estate Manager, the Sole Gardener will take the lead in the maintenance and development of the gardens and ground to enhance the extensive site.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of garden care and ornamental horticulture as well as lawn maintenance, operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, pruning of the above species and any other horticultural duties that may arise.
- This includes but is not limited to planting, pruning, weeding, lawn maintenance, hedge trimming, leaf collecting, mulching and the upkeep of pathways with some hard landscaping.
- There is considerable scope for development of the garden, and the owners are open to new ideas, therefore those with a creative flair would suit this role.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience at Skilled/Sole/Senior level, ideally holding a horticultural qualification of level 2 and above.
- PA1 & PA6 sprayers as well as a chainsaw licence is desirable but not essential.
- Demonstrable skill and experience in all aspects of garden care as well as strong plant knowledge is essential as is excellent knowledge of garden management, good time management skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Applicants must be loyal and trustworthy, self-motivated, discreet and interested in assisting with ongoing development of the garden through discussions with the Estate Manager.
- Some flexibility in hours will be considered but will be based around 08:00 – 16:00, Monday to Friday.
