An incredible opportunity has become available for a Skilled Gardener on a stunning garden rich in species diversity and a feast of colour and detail. The gardens are based near Devizes, Wiltshire and the position is full time.
The overall layout was conceived by the owner, who has subsequently worked with the specialist plantsman Nick Macer and the plant ecologist, James Hitchmough, in particular, to develop certain aspects of the garden, which covers sixteen acres. To the front of the house are striking displays of tropical bromeliads. Directly to the rear of the house starts the garden with a classical setting: a beautiful pergola, long borders, a double row of neatly clipped trees and a sweep of lawn.
Then, between the formal garden and the arboretum beyond, lies the carefully designed perennial meadow. This vibrant, diverse planting—established from seed in 2014—blends species from Europe, Asia, North America, and South Africa, offering a soft, painterly effect from afar and rich detail up close. This modern meadow forms a seamless transition between the formal garden and arboretum, reflecting contemporary ecological thinking and self-sustaining design. Other parts of the garden include a sunken garden, an arboretum, with an emphasis on wild-sourced material and recent introductions, as well as a pinetum and pool garden
The successful candidate will work closely with the Owners and Head Gardener to ensure the continued care, development, and high-standard maintenance of this garden. This role will involve contributing to the day-to-day upkeep of a wide variety of garden areas, including formal borders, maintenance of the arboretum and the perennial meadow. It offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a dedicated team preserving and enhancing the garden. The ideal candidate will have a particular interest in trees and shrubs and, ideally, knowledge and interest in propagating woody-plant material.
Applicants will ideally hold a horticultural qualification such as RHS Level 2 or above/ equivalent as well as some hands-on experience as a Skilled Gardener. Applicants should have good plant knowledge as well. Physical fitness is essential, a “can do” attitude and the ability to safely operate garden machinery. The gardens are kept as organically as possible therefore knowledge of organic practices would be advantageous. Adriving license is required due to the location of the property. References and DBS check will be requested at offer stage.
