A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join a renowned artist’s garden in Warminster, Wiltshire. This is a full-time, live-in gardening role with accommodation, ideal for a passionate horticulturist seeking to work within a creative and highly regarded private garden open to the public on select days.
This exceptional 1½-acre garden is celebrated for its innovative interpretation of the traditional English country garden. It features richly layered planting with perennials, shrubs, roses and seasonal displays, alongside a wildflower meadow, orchard, developing forest garden, and wildlife pond. The garden is maintained to an outstanding standard, balancing naturalistic planting with careful structure and embodies a spirit of ceaseless horticultural experimentation.
The Skilled Gardener will work closely with the Head Gardener to maintain and enhance the diverse gardens. Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting in the day-to-day maintenance of all areas of the garden, including lawn care, selective weeding with careful management of self-seeding plants, propagation, and precise, informed pruning.
- Contributing to the planning and implementation of new cutting and sand gardens, as well as the establishment and rotation of house and hothouse plant displays.
- Supporting the garden’s succession planting schemes, with particular attention to tender late-season bedding.
- Carrying out seasonal tasks such as bulb planting, pruning of fruit trees and roses, and mulching.
- Monitoring plant health, identifying pests and diseases, and applying appropriate treatments.
- Maintaining garden structures, paths, and seating areas.
- Overseeing the security of the property and general oversight of the property’s guest cottage.
- Assisting in preparing the garden for open days and special events.
- Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, especially when operating machinery or working at height.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrable horticultural experience and practical skills, along with a genuine passion for gardening, a positive attitude, and strong work ethic. They will be capable of working both independently and as part of a small team, taking direction from the Head Gardener as required. Physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions are essential, as is the ability to live on site to fulfil caretaker responsibilities. A full, clean driving licence is also required.
The accommodation comprises a newly refurbished, self-contained one bedroom apartment, provided rent‑free which is suitable for single occupancy or a couple. One dog is allowed, unfortunately no cats. Council tax and utility bills are covered by the employer. Working hours are 8 am to 4 pm with seasonal variations. Some weekend and evening work may be required, particularly during open days and special events for which time off in lieu will be provided.
