The owners have developed and cared for the gardens over the past 33 years and are now seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to assist the long-serving Head Gardener in maintaining and enhancing this exceptional garden.
The gardens are set within an 18th-century garden design that combines practical agricultural functions with aesthetic principles, creating a picturesque landscape for pleasure and productivity. The garden includes formally laid out mixed borders, a productive vegetable and fruit garden, greenhouses, a shrubbery, extensive yew hedging and topiary, a pleached lime walk, walks through mature woodlands and wildflower meadows, avenues, fruit trees, and a grass amphitheatre. The gardens are open to the public through the National Garden Scheme (NGS), and the owners also host a number of guided tours and talks throughout the year.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Head Gardener and provide support in all areas of garden maintenance and development.
- Spend approximately half of your time in the vegetable and fruit garden; strong horticultural knowledge and hands-on experience in fruit and vegetable growing is essential.
- Take initiative in the Head Gardener’s absence, support part-time workers and contractors, and maintain high horticultural standards across all parts of the garden.
- Act as a reliable and proactive second-in-command within the wider team, which includes a part-time gardener and external contractors responsible for hedge trimming and lawn care.
Qualifications
- Practical, physically fit, and committed gardener with a genuine passion for traditional horticulture and productive gardening.
- Team player who is adaptable and confident working independently when needed.
- Good level of plant knowledge, attention to detail, and a positive, can-do attitude.
