An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and skilled gardener to join a small and friendly team reporting to the longstanding Head Gardener. This role offers a unique chance to work in beautifully curated gardens while developing horticultural expertise and gaining valuable experience. Set within a prestigious private country estate in the Berkshire countryside, the gardens span approximately 10 acres of ornamental landscape surrounded by parkland, woodland and lakes. They are renowned for diverse planting schemes, architectural framework and year‑round visual interest, comprising interconnected garden rooms with formal avenues, water features, topiary, herbaceous borders, and a range of themed gardens including a cloister, white garden, walled kitchen, and specimen trees.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop the private garden to the highest horticultural standard alongside a team of five gardeners.
- Perform a wide range of garden tasks, including planting, weeding, pruning, deadheading, and seasonal maintenance with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ensure all working areas, facilities and equipment remain clean, organised, and presented to a high standard.
- Operate petrol‑driven horticultural machinery safely and proactively.
- Work independently or as part of a team, demonstrating excellent communication skills and a positive attitude.
- Adapt duties to meet the changing needs of the garden and wider estate, including weekend work on a rota basis.
Qualifications
- At least two years of practical horticultural experience.
- Sound knowledge of good cultivation practices, plant health, and the identification and management of common pests and diseases.
- Confidence in the safe operation of petrol‑driven horticultural machinery.
- Strong communication skills, self‑motivation, and a proactive approach to work.
- Physical fitness, resilience and capability for strenuous manual duties throughout the year.
