An exciting opportunity for a live-in domestic couple or Gardener / Groundsperson to join a welcoming private household on a beautiful rural property near Newbury, Berkshire. The role suits a practical and hands-on gardener with a genuine passion for flowers, productive gardening and the varied maintenance of a country garden and grounds.

Property Details: The property extends to approximately 20 acres in total, including surrounding fields, with ornamental and productive gardens forming a manageable and intimate working environment. The gardens are informal and creative in style, featuring a walled kitchen garden with raised beds, mixed herbaceous borders, lawns, hedges, a cutting garden and areas dedicated to flowers, fruit and vegetables. The owners are passionate about seasonal flowers and enjoy using cut flowers and produce from the garden throughout the year.

Responsibilities:

  • General garden and grounds maintenance, including lawn care, hedge trimming, weeding, pruning, watering, seasonal planting, border maintenance and ongoing care of flowers, shrubs, vegetables and productive areas.
  • Assistance with maintaining the cutting garden and supporting the continued development of the gardens alongside the owner.
  • Support for the household’s housekeeping duties – approximately 20 hours per week – cleaning, laundry, and assistance with dog care.
  • Occasional weekend work and flexible hours as required.
  • Contribute planting ideas, horticultural enthusiasm and seasonal projects where appropriate.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Sound practical knowledge of gardening and grounds maintenance.
  • Proactive, organised, self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  • Ability to manage a broad mix of gardening responsibilities within a private estate.
  • Comfortable around dogs and willing to assist with their care when the owners are travelling.
  • Interest in country living, seasonal produce, preserving produce or making jams/chutneys is highly desirable.

The household has two energetic spaniels; the successful candidate should be comfortable with dogs. Accommodation is provided as a one-bedroom apartment opposite the main house, with access to an additional guest bedroom if required. The role requires on-site residency and is best suited to a single person or a couple and one pet.

  • Salary: Combined salary for two full time £70,000 or £35,000 for a Gardener / Groundsperson.
