An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Assistant Gardener to join the team at Mertoun Gardens, near St Boswells. Set within approximately 26 acres surrounding Mertoun House, the gardens form part of a distinguished private estate, combining productive areas with established ornamental plantings. This is a rewarding and hands-on role within a unique setting, suited to a passionate horticulturalist who values attention to detail and takes pride in maintaining gardens of the highest standard.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist in the cultivation and presentation of high-quality fruit and vegetables
  • Maintain flower borders, climbing plants and ornamental displays to an exceptional standard
  • Carry out lawn care and ensure immaculate presentation of all grassed areas
  • Operate and maintain garden machinery with care and precision
  • Monitor and support the health and longevity of estate trees
  • Undertake detailed pruning, hedge cutting and seasonal horticultural work
  • Carry out spraying operations in accordance with best practice
  • Support and engage with estate visitors, including public and educational groups
  • Participate in weekend duties as part of the gardening team
  • Assist with general duties within the estate when required

About You

  • Recognised horticultural qualification (SVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent) or relevant experience
  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to high standards
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • A collaborative approach, with the ability to work independently when required
  • Flexible and adaptable to the needs of the estate
  • Willingness to work additional hours when required
  • Full UK driving licence essential
  • PA1/PA6 certification and First Aid training advantageous but not essential

Further Details

  • This role is based on annualised hours, the number of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 26 equal instalments over the year
  • Our company is based near Melrose in the Scottish Borders
  • Assistance with accommodation may be available
  • Salary: £25-£30K per annum – DOE
