At the heart of the role is a newly established garden designed by renowned garden designer Alistair Cameron. Currently in the early stages of implementation, the garden presents a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to play a defining role in its evolution, helping to shape, nurture and develop it into one of the finest private gardens in the region.
The gardens extend to approximately two acres and include formal planting, ornamental borders, lawns, specimen trees and a productive walled garden with greenhouse facilities. The walled garden is intended to supply the house throughout the year with a variety of seasonal fruit, vegetables, herbs and cut flowers, providing both produce for the kitchen and flowers for the house. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, cultivating and managing this productive space, ensuring a continuous supply of high-quality produce and floral displays throughout the seasons.
Beyond the formal gardens, the role encompasses responsibility for over 200 acres of diverse countryside including species-rich meadows, woodlands, ponds, wetlands, hedgerows and newly established wildlife habitats. In recent years, the estate has undertaken an extensive programme of environmental enhancement, including the planting of more than 24,000 trees, the creation of seven ponds, the establishment of over three miles of hedgerows and the restoration of approximately 50 acres of meadowland. These projects have already attracted a wide variety of birdlife and other wildlife, and the estate is committed to continuing its long-term programme of conservation, biodiversity enhancement and landscape improvement.
As the gardens mature, there will be considerable scope for the Head Gardener to refine planting schemes, introduce new ideas and develop the garden’s character while remaining true to the original design vision. This is a rare opportunity to become involved at the beginning of a significant garden’s journey and to leave a lasting mark on its future development, combining outstanding horticulture with meaningful environmental stewardship.
In addition to the responsibilities, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to become involved in the development of a new high-end holiday rental and hospitality scheme. This exciting project is currently in its infancy and will include the creation of a completely new garden and landscape setting to complement the development.
Working alongside the owners and professional designers, the Head Gardener will have the rare opportunity to contribute to the planning, establishment and long-term evolution of this new garden from the ground up. As a largely blank canvas, the project offers significant scope for creativity and personal input, allowing the successful candidate to leave a lasting mark on a garden that will develop and mature over many years.
This additional responsibility makes the role particularly attractive for an ambitious horticultural professional seeking more than a traditional maintenance position. It offers the chance to be involved in the creation and stewardship of multiple gardens and landscapes, shaping both established and emerging projects across the wider estate.
