An incredible opportunity has become available for a Junior Gardener to join a team on a horticulturally diverse, beautiful country property in a rural setting South of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic gardener with passion and drive to learn and grow as a horticulturalist as they will work alongside a longstanding knowledgeable and experienced gardener who will be their mentor.
This impressive family home is surrounded by 35 acres of beautiful mature gardens and grounds extending to woodland. The gardens have been beautifully landscaped with a 20-year-old ornamental walled garden to the side of the house, a lean-to greenhouse and a newly established kitchen garden next to it to grow a large selection of fruit and vegetables. Wisteria grows along the side of the house and a beautiful Laburnum ‘golden cage’ is featured.
Beautiful vistas have been created all around the grounds of the property. Throughout there is a mixture of well-manicured lawns, mature trees and wide borders bursting with colour, as well as an orchard with apple, pear and plum trees, lake with an island, newly created outdoor swimming pool with planting surrounding, and wildflower meadow. The grounds also extend to a large paddock, with a small maturing woodland and host 7 alpacas and 4 chickens.
The role of the Junior Gardener will include planting seeds, seedlings, and mature plants (flowers, shrubs, trees), watering, fertilizing, and mulching plants, pruning trees, shrubs, and hedges, identifying and addressing plant diseases and pest infestations.Garden Maintenance responsibilities include weeding and removing debris, maintaining lawns (mowing, edging, etc.), Clearing paths and walkways, maintaining garden structures (fences, patios, sheds), cleaning and organizing garden areas and managing the irrigation system.The Gardener will be part of a wider estate team that work together when required therefore, additional duties may be required.
Candidates will either have basic gardening experience or have recently completed a horticultural qualification and demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career in horticulture. As such, it would be advantageous to show a background in gardening on private estates, volunteering or paid employment. However, training on the job will be offered working with the experienced gardener.
Applicants will be open minded, willing to learn, enjoys working as part of a team, happy to work in all weather, and physically fit. This is an exciting role for which the successful candidate will gain a thorough grounding in all aspects of private-estate gardening. Experience with using garden equipment and tools would be advantageous.
The position is full time, Monday to Friday 40 hours per week. Annual leave is 20 days plus bank holidays. Due to the location of the property and no public transportation links, a driving licence is essential and own vehicle.
