We are seeking a knowledgeable, motivated, and detail-orientedFormal Gardener to join the team on our stunning 650-acre private estate, Alderbrook Park, located in the picturesque Surrey Hills. The estate features thoughtfully designed formal gardens, including ornamental beds, manicured lawns, rose gardens, topiary, and mature trees. This role requires a high standard of horticultural care and presentation to meet the vision of the estate’s external garden designer and the expectations of the client.
Key Responsibilities:
– Maintain and enhance formal garden areas, including flower beds, borders, rose gardens, and structured planting schemes.
– Carry out expert pruning, deadheading, staking, and seasonal plant care.
– Perform high-level lawn care including mowing, edging, aeration, feeding, and scarifying.
– Manage topiary and hedging to a precise and high aesthetic standard.
– Monitor and treat pests and diseases using integrated pest management techniques.
– Maintain and operate irrigation systems efficiently.
– Undertake planting & replanting schemes in accordance with seasonal plans & design briefs.
– Support in the care & management of trees, including formative pruning & health inspections.
– Work collaboratively with the estate team to deliver horticultural excellence and adapt to evolving garden design requirements.
– Liaise with the Assistant Estate Manager and Estate Manager to deliver work in line with guidance from the external designer and the estate owner.
Skills and Qualifications:
– RHS Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture (or equivalent) is essential; RHS Level 3 desirable.
– Proven experience working in a formal garden or large private estate setting.
– Strong plant knowledge, particularly of ornamental and heritage plants.
– Skilled in pruning, topiary, and seasonal plant care techniques.
– Understanding of lawn management and irrigation systems.
– Ability to identify and treat plant pests and diseases.
– Good communication skills & the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
– Physically fit, with a positive and proactive approach to work.
– A full UK driving licence is preferred.
Additional Information:
– This is a full-time, permanent position.
– Working hours are 8am – 5pm
– Occasional weekend or out-of-hours work may be required, particularly during peak seasons.
