Experienced Gardener – Vacancy

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener in search of a rewarding role within a small team.

This role will suit a skilled and practical gardener with 3-5 years’ experience at least, and a genuine love for their profession.

This is a rare opportunity for a passionate and hands‑on gardener to contribute to the care and enhancement of this beautiful garden set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, acting as Deputy Head Gardener, with the opportunity to further progress to become Head Gardener.

The 24 acre garden which is set on a steep hillside comprises of woodland, formal terraces, limestone rock garden, rose garden, lawns, mature trees, ornamental planting and many smaller garden spaces alongside water features.

Reporting to the Head Gardener, the successful candidate will assist with the maintenance, upkeep of the gardens and wider estate grounds to an exceptionally high standard.

Forestry work, hard landscaping and general estate work will also be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out a wide range of practical gardening and grounds maintenance duties across the gardens and grounds
  • Assist in the restoration, maintenance and enhancement of the gardens and woodland areas.
  • Ensure all work is completed to a high standard, within agreed timescales and in line with good environmental practices.
  • Operate machinery and equipment safely and appropriately, including undertaking basic maintenance and reporting faults when required.
  • Adhere to all health and safety procedures, including the correct use of PPE and safe working practices at all times.
  • Lead guided group tours

About You

  • Qualification to RHS Level 2 or equivalent.
  • PA1 & PA 6 Pesticide Training
  • 3 – 5 years previous experience in gardening, grounds maintenance or estate gardening.
  • A genuine passion for horticulture and outdoor work.
  • Good plant knowledge and an appreciation for historic gardens and landscapes.
  • A proactive, hands‑on and hardworking approach.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in delivering high standards.
  • A willingness to undertake training and gain relevant qualifications where required.
  • Experience operating garden machinery and equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Tractor driving experience an advantage but not a requisite.

Remuneration package: salary in the region of £30,000 dependent on experience. Statutory holiday and pension scheme.

Working Hours: Monday-Friday (7-8 hours per day depending on time of year)

Indicative start date: September 2026 or as soon as possible.
