An exciting opportunity has arisen for an knowledgeable Experienced Gardener to join a private estate on the outskirts of Chadlington, near Chipping Norton. This is a newly created role to support the ongoing development and maintenance of a thoughtfully designed garden set within a stunning rural landscape.

The estate features approximately one hectare of formal gardens, beautifully integrated into four hectares of informal grounds. The formal garden, which surrounds the main residence, includes a series of terraced areas planted with a mix of perennials and shrubs, as well as structured elements such as topiary and hedging. The garden also includes a croquet lawn, wildflower meadows, and a walled kitchen garden equipped with a newly installed Alitex greenhouse. This area is designed for both productive and ornamental horticulture, including vegetable beds and cutting beds.

Additional features of the garden include an espaliered Malus (apple) walk and roof-pleached mulberries, contributing to the estate’s seasonal interest and structure. There is also a walled tennis court with an elevated viewing terrace, providing both a recreational space and a striking garden feature.

Beyond the formal gardens, the wider estate encompasses a recently planted orchard, a lake framed by young ornamental trees, as well as newly established areas of parkland and woodland plantations, offering a diverse horticultural and ecological environment. There is a full time Groundsperson who will work alongside the Gardener and will be responsible for the lawncare, hedge cutting and groundwork.

The successful candidate will have a strong horticultural background with practical experience in maintaining and developing formal and informal gardens to a high standard. They should be confident working independently, with excellent plant knowledge and a proactive, hands-on approach. Experience in kitchen gardening, pruning of trained fruit trees, and ornamental planting is essential. Experience with cut flowers would be advantageous as the owners enjoy seasonal displays for the house. A driving licence is also essential due to the rural location of the property.

The position is open to a live in or live out Gardener. However, the 2-bed accommodation onsite is currently being renovated and is due to be completed in 6 months’ time. During the initial 6 months, the employers are open to providing support with local rental accommodation temporarily for the successful candidate until the onsite property is ready. For the onsite accommodation, council tax and bills are paid by the employer.

This is an exceptional role for a skilled and experienced gardener seeking a long-term position on a beautiful and evolving private estate. You will work closely with the property owners and other team members to maintain and continue to develop this remarkable garden.
