Experienced Gardener – Vacancy

There is an interesting vacancy for an experienced, enthusiastic, cheerful gardener to take on the management, care and maintenance of two separate gardens in South Cambridgeshire. The position would suit a self-motivated knowledgeable plants person with a hands on, can-do attitude to work with keen and involved garden owners.

Both gardens are in very close proximity (approx. 1m) to each other and to the outskirts of Cambridge City centre. Both are situated on chalk hills and measure 10 and 8 acres respectively and are broadly similar.

Garden 1: 10acres

Approx. 3days

This garden has been landscaped designed by Chris Beardshaw and is divided into woodland, wildflower meadows with tree avenues, orchards and formal gardens consisting of long and deep herbaceous borders, rose and topiary garden zones divided by a lawn and rill water feature. There is also a walled kitchen garden with greenhouse. Additional facilities include a tennis court, golf greens, swimming pool and a lighting and irrigation system. A new barn houses all the gardening equipment and storage, enclosed seating area and facilities.

Garden 2: 8 acres

Approx. 2days

This garden is similarly divided into woodland, meadow and formal garden consisting of herbaceous beds which contain several heritage irises, lawn area and pond.

The ideal person will have good horticultural qualifications with experience in a similar role. They must have good knowledge of seasonal horticultural practices including propagation and exemplary practical gardening skills. Experience of managing and maintaining topiary, mixed borders and lawns is essential, as is competence with the operation and maintenance of the normal range of garden machinery, with spray certificates desirable.

A keen eye for detail with an ability to use their initiative is key, as is the ability to communicate with the owners to help develop the gardens with both owners open to future development. We are hoping for someone who can commit to a long-term partnership to ensure this legacy.

Working hours are full time spilt on a flexible timetable between the two sites but notionally 3:2 days. Most machinery and tools will be provided, and a contact list can be established for any additional requirements.
