Estate Gardener – Hungerford. This is an excellent and rare opportunity for an experienced well rounded Estate Gardener on a beautiful private estate near Hungerford. This role will suit a physically fit and strong gardener/grounds person. Working alongside the existing gardener, as well as wider estate staff. The successful candidate will be flexible, have the ability to work independently and have experience in all aspects of garden and estate maintenance at the highest standard.
This quintessentially English country house and grounds of 32-acres comprise a beautiful main house with a coach house and lodge, surrounded by woodland, rolling landscape, a lake, and managed gardens. The formal aspect includes a greenhouse, specimen trees, expansive areas of lawn, a kitchen garden, mixed and herbaceous beds and borders, cutting flowers, a swimming pool and tennis court, gravel driveways, terraces with pot plants and climbers all set within picturesque grassland and woodland that allows privacy on all sides.
Applicants for this role must possess at lease 3-5 years’ experience working on residential properties. Be hands-on and experienced in gardening/grounds management and who enjoys being outside working in all weather conditions. They must ensure the smooth running of the garden and have a keen attention to detail. An academic horticultural qualification of RHS level 2 would be beneficial but is not essential. Spraying certificates PA1 and PA6 and chainsaw license are preferable.
An ability to operate power tools safely including a chainsaw, as well as operate and perform basic maintenance of a range of garden machinery is required. Eg. Tractor, ride on mower, strimmer’s, pedestrian mowers, and hedge trimmers. Confidence with operating ride on mowers on sloped lawns. Undertake regular maintenance of gardens including weeding, pruning, mulching, hedge cutting etc. Along with confidence in planting of new flowers and shrubs. Have the ability to identify any diseases or pests affecting any of the plants and treat appropriately. Good knowledge and techniques of landscape maintenance. Experience in growing plants, flowers and vegetables.
Applicants should be willing and able to contribute to the smooth running of the estate, in conjunction with the property owners. As well as the ability to manage their time effectively across all aspects of the role to meet client expectations. Candidates with a willingness and an ability to check and monitor non-horticultural aspects of the house and grounds, i.e., basic swimming pool maintenance, occasional driving duties, estate handyman duties etc. The owners’ welcome proactive suggestions and contributions to aid the efficiency and development of the garden and wider estate. As this role is based within a private estate the ideal candidate must be loyal and trustworthy and display the upmost discretion at all times.
The ideal candidate will have a positive outlook and friendly character, can do attitude with good organisational and time keeping skills. This is an ideal role for a hands-on, team player who is passionate about gardening and having the freedom to work across all aspects of gardening and maintenance within a small estate.
Working hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm. Occasionally flexibility will be required. Any weekend work will be compensated as overtime or days in lieu. Annual leave will be 28 days, including Bank holidays
Please note, the successful candidate with be offered subject to extensive reference checks both written and verbal as well as a DBS check. Due to the rural location of the property, a full drivers licence is required.
SALARY: Up to £30,000 depending on experience
