The Logistics and Trade Compliance Manager is responsible for leading and optimizing the company's end-to-end logistics operations while ensuring full compliance with Canadian and U.S. customs, export, and trade regulations. This role serves as the organization's subject-matter authority for cross-border trade compliance and logistics strategy, ensuring efficient movement of materials and finished goods, minimizing duty and regulatory risk, and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders, carriers, customs authorities, and regulatory agencies. This position designs, implements, and manages the company's trade compliance program, establishes internal controls and SOPs, and drives continuous improvement across logistics, transportation, and compliance processes. Through strategic leadership, this role enhances operational efficiency, mitigates risk, improves service performance, and strengthens the company's competitive position.
Key Responsibilities
- Logistics Operations Management
- Develop and implement logistics strategies to optimize the flow of materials and finished goods across manufacturing, distribution, and branch networks.
- Oversee transportation services to ensure on-time, cost-effective, and high-quality service delivery.
- Manage logistics scheduling, shipment prioritization, supplier and carrier coordination, and resolution of scheduling conflicts.
- Establish and monitor logistics KPIs including transit time, freight cost, on-time delivery, and service reliability.
- Trade & Customs Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable Canadian and U.S. customs, export, and import regulations.
- Oversee product classification, valuation, country of origin determination, duty assessment, and marking requirements.
- Monitor changes in trade laws, tariffs, sanctions, and customs procedures and ensure timely internal implementation.
- Maintain accurate customs documentation, records, and regulatory filings.
- Act as the primary liaison with customs authorities and regulatory agencies.
- Trade Compliance Program Leadership
- Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive company-wide trade compliance program.
- Develop SOPs, workflows, internal controls, and compliance documentation for import/export processes.
- Create and deliver internal training programs to build compliance awareness across Procurement, Logistics, Distribution, Pricing, Manufacturing, and Sourcing teams.
- Vendor & Stakeholder Management
- Negotiate and manage contracts with carriers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and logistics service providers.
- Establish strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless operations.
- Evaluate vendor performance against SLAs and drive continuous service improvements.
- Serve as escalation point for logistics and trade-related issues.
- Risk Management & Internal Controls
- Identify compliance and logistics risks and implement corrective actions.
- Lead or support audits, investigations, and root cause analysis.
- Develop contingency plans for supply chain disruptions, transportation delays, and regulatory changes.
- Continuous Improvement & Cost Optimization
- Identify duty-saving opportunities through strategic classification, origin planning, and use of FTAs (e.g., CUSMA/USMCA).
- Drive improvements in ERP, TMS, and WMS system integration to enhance data accuracy and compliance.
- Lead logistics and supply chain process improvement initiatives to reduce cost, improve service, and enhance sustainability.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and develop logistics and compliance professionals.
- Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, Logistics, International Business, Legal Studies, or related field.
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience in logistics, supply chain, and/or trade compliance roles.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian and U.S. customs regulations, export controls, and FTAs (CUSMA/USMCA).
- Proven experience developing and managing trade compliance programs, SOPs, and training initiatives.
- Experience supporting or leading customs audits.
- Familiarity with manufacturing environments and product costing methodologies.
- Proficiency with ERP, TMS, and WMS systems.
- CCS or similar certification considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Compensation
$90,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
