Are you a commercially strong Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager who enjoys being close to the delivery of technically complex projects? Eaton Syalon are exclusively partnering with an established and growing engineering organisation to recruit a Senior Quantity Surveyor / Commercial Manager into a key position within its Technical Operations team.

Internally titled Contract Manager – Technical Operations, this is a hands-on commercial role where you’ll work directly alongside Project Managers, engineers and operational teams, taking ownership of project commercial performance from contract award through to final account. The business operates across complex engineering and infrastructure environments, including power generation, marine, energy and heavy industry.

This isn’t a role where you’ll be sitting on the sidelines simply reporting the numbers. You’ll be embedded within project delivery – protecting margin, challenging where needed, identifying commercial risk early and making sure the business is commercially protected throughout the project lifecycle.

What will you be doing?

  • Managing project budgets, cost plans, cash flow forecasts and commercial reporting
  • Monitoring costs, commitments, revenue, margin and forecast outturn
  • Identifying cost overruns, margin erosion and commercial risks at an early stage
  • Preparing and submitting applications for payment, milestone invoices and valuations
  • Measuring and valuing completed works on remeasurable contracts
  • Managing variations, change control and contractual notices
  • Preparing and negotiating variation quotations
  • Reviewing contracts, purchase orders and amendments and identifying commercial risks and opportunities
  • Managing subcontract commercial arrangements, applications, variations and final accounts
  • Supporting and leading claims, disputes and more complex commercial matters
  • Working closely with Finance around revenue recognition and cash collection
  • Providing commercial guidance to Project Managers, engineers and site teams
  • Leading the preparation, negotiation and agreement of final accounts
  • Helping strengthen commercial controls and processes across the wider business

The position will also provide functional guidance and mentoring to a Contract Officer within the Site Operations team.

Who are we looking for?

You might currently be working as a Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Manager, Project Commercial Manager or Contracts Manager. What matters is that you have a strong grounding in the commercial management of projects and are comfortable working in a practical, technical environment.

Ideally, you’ll bring experience across areas such as:

  • Engineering, construction, energy, power, industrial or other technical/project-led environments
  • Fixed-price, milestone-based and/or remeasurable contracts
  • Cost control, forecasting and project commercial reporting
  • Applications for payment and valuations
  • Variations, change control and claims
  • Contract administration and contractual notices
  • Subcontract commercial management
  • Final account preparation and negotiation
  • Commercial risk management
  • Working directly with Project Managers, engineers and operational/site teams
  • Advanced Excel and project control, financial or ERP systems
  • Knowledge of NEC, JCT, FIDIC or other standard forms of contract would be advantageous, as would a Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification within Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline. These are desirable rather than essential.
