Overview

With over 300 aircraft and 90 million+ passengers a year, it takes a hard‑working and passionate engineering team to keep our aircraft in the air whilst ensuring our customers travel in comfort and complete safety. That’s where you’ll step in as one of our new Apprentice Aeronautical Engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and interpret information or data to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Record or enter information: paper based or electronic, including job sheets, risk assessments, test results and handover documents.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and procedures, applying safe systems of work such as risk assessments and COSHH.
  • Identify problems, analyse evidence and determine the cause and required maintenance activity.
  • Plan, organise and use resources to complete tasks.
  • Follow instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Apply mathematical techniques and engineering principles to solve engineering problems.
  • Apply maintenance methods and practices: remove, refit, replace, repair systems or components.
  • Test and check aircraft equipment or systems, such as built‑in test equipment and flight control systems.
  • Assess the condition of aircraft components and equipment, identifying actions required.
  • Select, check, use, store and control tools and equipment.
  • Apply good housekeeping before, during and after the activity to the work area.
  • Use information technology for document creation, communication and information management, complying with GDPR and cyber‑security.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, segregating resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Communicate verbally with colleagues and stakeholders and in writing.
  • Consider the properties of aircraft materials and the possibility of damage while performing the activity.
  • Select aircraft consumables for carrying out maintenance activity.
  • Carry out pre‑use checks of resources and ensure sufficient supplies of materials and consumables for maintenance activity.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
  • Apply equity, diversity and inclusion policies and procedures.
  • Apply quality assurance procedures, such as completion of aircraft servicing schedules or aircraft technical logs.
  • Apply team‑working principles.

Recruitment Process

  1. Stage 1: Introduction Video – answer three questions on our video interview platform.
  2. Stage 2: Online Aptitude Tests – assess Numerical, Verbal and Abstract reasoning.
  3. Stage 3: Telephone / Video Interviews – interview with a member of the recruitment team via telephone or Teams/Zoom.
  4. Stage 4: Assessment Day – invited to an Assessment Day event, the final stage of the recruitment process.

Apprenticeship Details

Complete a CAT A1 training course over a 9‑month period at our Luton and/or Kemble training academy. Between months 10 and 24 you’ll continue your learning by working full time at Luton or Gatwick. You will build the evidence and practical knowledge to secure your UKCAA and EASA Part‑66 Category A1 modules, then pass the end‑point assessment to become a licensed engineer. Paid for accommodation for the first 9 months, breakfast and dinner, up to 20 % bonus, 5 % pension and staff travel benefits, including flight discounts.
