Job Title: Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist
Agency: University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
Location: Birmingham, United Kingdom
Salary/Rate: 113,565 to 150,569 £ / Year
Applications are invited for the post of Substantive Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). The post will be based on a full-time 10 PA fixed-term contract.
Job overview
This post has been created to contribute to a tertiary specialist neuro-ophthalmology service receiving referrals for afferent and efferent disease from across the region and more widely, working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Department
Ophthalmology is located at four hospital sites as part of UHB, which are: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital Birmingham (HHB), Solihull Hospital (SH) and Good Hope Hospital (GHH). Neuro-ophthalmology is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. There are more than 40 substantive consultants who provide outpatient and surgical services. The entire range of ophthalmology subspecialty clinics is provided, and there is close communication with consultants in other specialties. As well as consultant ophthalmologists the eye service is supported by ophthalmic specialist trainees, staff-grades, fellows, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, nurse specialists, and ophthalmic technicians.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is a tertiary neurosciences centre with inpatient neurology and neurosurgery, neuro‑oncology and neuro‑radiology, providing regional skull base and pituitary, neuro‑vascular, and CSF multidisciplinary teams, that the post holder will be embedded with.
Main duties of the job
This is a post to support UHB Ophthalmology services in Neuro‑ophthalmology, and the successful applicant will be expected to establish a service to help meet the clinical requirements of the emergency workload from across the region. It is anticipated that the post holder will have post‑CCT subspecialty training in Neuro‑ophthalmology. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the research portfolio of the department. Whilst the majority of sessions are likely to take place at QEHB, there may be a clinical need for sessions to also be at any of the other hospital sites.
Flexibility with regard to the timetabling of fixed sessions will be expected. We are working towards a three‑session day so some of the timetabled fixed sessions may be evening sessions and/or weekend sessions. We are also increasing our provision of community ophthalmology and thus clinics may include review of remotely acquired investigations. Flexible/annualised sessions may be included for some theatre sessions to support the department in maximising theatre capacity for our patients.
