POSITION SUMMARY
Supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in fabricating and installing metal structural parts, such as bulkheads, plates, and frames in ships. Work with other crafts as instructed by supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays.
- Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations and policies while performing duties.
- Assign work on multiple assignments during a workday and monitor progress onboard marine vessels.
- Monitor work performances and productivity to assist in meeting production goals.
- Manage employees and plan ahead to have their crew work safely.
- Lay out parts, bulkheads, and frames; loft parts from a table of offsets.
- Make quality cuts with torch or plasma.
- Flag cranes, figure weights, and know how to rig all types of lifts.
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly and/or indirectly supervise and/or train subordinates assigned to the crew.
REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent with one to three years previous shipyard experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Previous supervision experience is preferred.
- Must be able to manage a crew of workers to get the job done efficiently, effectively, and safely.
- Requires knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations.
- Ability to read and comprehend written, oral, or diagram forms or plans.
- Ability to read and interpret blue prints.
- Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and employees.
- Arithmetic skills: add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
- Ability to read a tape measure; use transits and levels; fit pipe and handrails; fit an I-Beam.
- Behavioral attributes: integrity, ethics, flexibility/adaptability, initiative, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, safety conscious, and multi-tasking.
- Maintain confidential integrity of details pertaining to Eastern Shipbuilding Group.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Perform duties requiring regular communication, standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and reaching. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be physically and medically qualified to wear required personal protective equipment under OSHA standards, work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft, work in confined spaces, and withstand extreme heat and cold.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment includes risk of electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, continuous loud noise, and other hazards typical of a heavy industrial shipyard. Rigorous compliance with safety procedures, policies, and personal safety equipment requirements is mandatory.
