Role Summary
To provide clinical leadership, professional guidance and operational support within the Home while promoting high-quality, safe and person-centred care. The Clinical Lead plays a key role in supporting clinical governance, resident wellbeing, multidisciplinary working and the delivery of safe and effective nursing care in line with professional, regulatory and organisational standards. The role supports nursing and care teams to maintain high standards of care, professional practice and resident experience throughout the Home. The Clinical Lead will support medicines management, safeguarding, care planning, audit activity, staff development and quality improvement initiatives while contributing positively to the overall operational and clinical performance of the service. The role may involve supporting residents living with dementia, mental health conditions, behavioural support needs or complex care requirements depending on the service environment. The Clinical Lead may, where required, support shift coordination, clinical oversight and operational decision-making in the absence of the Deputy Manager or Home Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of high-quality, safe and person-centred nursing care tailored to individual resident needs, preferences and outcomes.
  • Promote resident wellbeing, dignity, independence, choice and positive clinical outcomes through evidence-based practice.
  • Support effective assessment, care planning, risk management and review of resident care.
  • Provide clinical guidance and support in response to changing resident needs, clinical concerns, incidents or emergencies.
  • Support residents, families and representatives to be appropriately involved in care planning and decision-making processes.
  • Promote positive relationships with residents, relatives, visitors, external professionals and wider stakeholders.
  • Contribute to maintaining a welcoming, inclusive and professional environment for residents, visitors and colleagues.

Leadership & People Management

  • Provide visible clinical leadership and professional support to nursing and care teams.
  • Promote high standards of care, professionalism and accountability throughout the Home.
  • Support staff supervision, mentoring, induction and development where appropriate.
  • Support effective shift coordination and delegation of duties within the scope of the role.
  • Escalate staffing, performance or practice concerns appropriately and without delay.
  • Promote teamwork, learning and continuous improvement within the Home environment.

Communication & Collaborative Working

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with residents, relatives, advocates, multidisciplinary teams and external professionals.
  • Liaise professionally with GPs, pharmacists, allied health professionals, social workers, community teams and external agencies where required.
  • Participate positively in handovers, clinical discussions, care reviews and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Ensure relevant clinical information is communicated clearly, accurately and appropriately.
  • Escalate safeguarding concerns, incidents, operational risks or clinical issues appropriately and without delay.
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative, supportive and team-focused working environment.

Governance, Compliance & Professional Standards

  • Maintain resident dignity, privacy, confidentiality and respect at all times.
  • Support compliance with professional standards, organisational policies, safeguarding requirements, NMC standards and relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Support safe medicines management, clinical practice and care documentation in line with legal, professional and organisational requirements.
  • Support clinical governance, quality assurance, audit activity, risk management and continuous improvement processes.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and professional clinical records and documentation.
  • Support incident reporting, investigations, reflective learning and improvement actions where required.
  • Contribute to inspection readiness, audits, reviews and improvement action plans where required.
  • Adhere to safeguarding, emergency procedures, fire safety requirements and organisational health and safety processes at all times, escalating concerns appropriately and without delay.

  • Maintain active NMC registration and adhere to the NMC Code and professional practice standards.
  • Participate fully in supervision, appraisal, mandatory training and continuing professional development activities.
  • Maintain awareness of current evidence-based practice, clinical developments and regulatory requirements relevant to the role.

  • Contribute to quality improvement, governance and service development initiatives across the Home.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support shift coordination, clinical oversight or nurse-in-charge responsibilities where required.
  • Provide clinical leadership and professional support during periods of operational pressure, staff absence or service escalation where appropriate.
  • Participate in on-call, governance, audit or quality improvement activities where required.
  • Attend meetings, inspections, training sessions and governance forums as required.
  • Support wider Home operations, service developments and organisational initiatives where reasonably required within the scope of the role.
  • Undertake any other duties reasonably requested in line with the scope, responsibility and seniority of the role.

The Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse on the live NMC Register appropriate to the role and service requirements.
  • GCSE Grade C or above in English & Maths, or equivalent qualification; OR demonstrable literacy, numeracy and communication skills appropriate to the role.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and compliance with NMC revalidation requirements where applicable.
  • Minimum of 2 years post-registration nursing experience within a regulated healthcare, nursing or care environment.
  • Experience supporting, supervising or coordinating nursing and care teams within a regulated care setting.
  • Demonstrable clinical knowledge and understanding of person-centred care, safeguarding, governance, risk management and professional nursing responsibilities.
  • Experience supporting residents with dementia, elderly care needs, mental health conditions, physical disabilities or complex care needs where applicable.
  • Understanding of clinical governance, medication management, audit activity and quality improvement processes within a regulated care environment.

  • Ability to support and oversee the delivery of high-quality, safe and person-centred nursing care within a regulated care environment.
  • Ability to promote resident wellbeing, dignity, independence and positive clinical outcomes through effective clinical leadership and evidence-based practice.
