Senior Technical Officer - Waste in Lewes

Do you want to improve waste and recycling services for nearly a million people and make net zero a reality? Then this role could be for you.

The Senior Technical Officer helps deliver essential waste and recycling services used by every East Sussex resident. You will manage key facilities, projects, contracts and service improvements, working with Veolia, Brighton & Hove City Council, district and borough councils and other partners. The role supports major change, including higher recycling, lower carbon impacts, Environment Act reforms, UK ETS, closed landfill, coastal pollution response, PFI contract expiry, future waste strategy and local government reorganisation. You will analyse data, manage budgets and payments, prepare clear reports and briefings, develop policies and procedures, and help shape practical, high-profile services that offer variety, responsibility and real public impact.

We are looking for candidates who in their written response can demonstrate experience of all the following:

• Significant experience working at a strategic level in the waste industry
• Experience of developing and maintaining effective partnerships
• The ability to take on new and complex areas of work, learn quickly, and lead them confidently through to delivery
• Preparing reports, develop strategies and ideas for policy improvement, and supporting good decision-making
• Strongly self-motivated, ability to work under pressure and translate policy into workable solutions
