Lansdowne Secure Children’s home is one of only 14 in the UK and is a modern, state of the art building with excellent and diverse facilities. There is an opportunity for a handyperson to work here on a variety of tasks that ensures the job always remains interesting and every day is different.

The postholder will be responsible for several aspects of helping to maintain the home, undertaking general maintenance activities as directed by the Buildings Manager. It is vital that all works are carried out to a very high standard for the safety and security of the children we look after. We need someone with a positive, can-do attitude.

  • Carry out security procedures for Lansdowne buildings and grounds in accordance with East Sussex County Council Policy. Contact the appropriate services in the event of an emergency.

  • Undertake minor building / equipment repairs as well as some light decorating work and should be able to work under own initiative as well as responding to requests from staff.

  • Undertake floor treatment work, for example, preparation, application of polishes and seals and carpet shampooing, based on consultations between the caretaker and a nominated officer. Inspect and maintain certain equipment, effect minor repairs and report defects

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Will treat residents at Lansdowne and other residential homes with dignity and respect and maintain confidentiality as in line with departmental policies

  • Can undertake a range of handyperson duties

  • Are able to to act on own initiative, dealing with any unexpected problems that arise

  • Have general repair experience & able to undertake minor redecoration tasks

  • Have experience working around children

The role will primarily be based at Lansdowne Secure Children’s home in Hailsham, but there is a need for someone who can also travel to other open homes within the county to assist with handyperson duties. Travel costs to the other homes will be covered, but you must be able to demonstrate the ability to travel to these homes.

This is a unique position where even the smallest changes can make the biggest differences to the young people in the homes.
