Do you want to make a difference to waste services in East Sussex? The this role could be for you.

The waste service manages all the waste and recycling that our residents create. Everyone uses the service and we work with our districts and borough and several contractors to deliver it.

The waste team is small and one of our main priorities is managing the long-term contract with Veolia. Veolia operates several services on East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council’s behalf. The waste team make sure that Veolia are doing the job we have asked them to do. The service provides Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs), a composting facility, a recycling sorting facility, waste transfer stations and an energy recovery facility.

The Contract Monitoring Officer is an important member of the team. You will be responsible for regularly inspecting our facilities. You will have an eye for detail as during your visits you will be making sure that Veolia is doing a good job by assessing operations, health and safety and several other important areas. You will need a current, clean driving licence and access to your own vehicle.

You will also act as a main point of contact for residents who use our facilities. We get over 1.5 million visits per year to our sites and you will also update our web pages when necessary to make sure residents get the most up to date information on the service.

You will also work closely with other team members on projects, and you will lead on your own projects. You will build up positive relationships with our contractors and our districts and boroughs and other colleagues, analysing data and checking and arranging payments and monitoring budgets.

Your covering letter must demonstrate experience of –

  • Monitoring contracts and how you can ensure contractors are doing a good job
  • When you have improved the safety of services
  • Dealing with difficult situations
  • Checking invoices. making payments and maintaining spreadsheets
  • Working effectively with multiple stakeholders

We are accepting CV and covering letters for this role. You must provide a covering letter and it must demonstrate how you meet the bullet points above.

Interviews will take place in person. Interviews will be taking place on 14 and 17 October.

We offer a diverse range of benefits to help and support you during your employment. More information can be found on our benefits page.
