The Role: This high-impact specialist role leads on complex environmental health issues—from air quality to contaminated land—and advises on National Significant Infrastructure Projects including Sizewell C and offshore energy projects. It also involves mentoring new staff and ensuring our work is informed, innovative, and effective.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert advice and planning advice on air quality management and contaminated land, noise, with a focus on major developments and NSIPs.
- Take appropriate interventions and, where necessary, enforce actions to protect the public and environment.
- Manage and mentor technical officers to build expertise and resilience.
- Represent the Council at technical forums and multi-agency partnerships.
- Drive evidence-based practice and support strategic planning.
- Shape service improvements that enhance health outcomes and sustainability.
- Collaborate with the broader team to provide targeted interventions and advice on statutory nuisance, private water supplies and environmental permitting.
Essential Qualifications:
- A degree in Environmental Health or a related environmental science.
- Extensive knowledge of environmental health legislation and enforcement.
- Proven experience in environmental protection and regulation, including specialisms such as statutory nuisances, air quality, environmental permitting, contaminated land, nuisance, drainage, and private water supplies.
- Mentoring skills, with the ability to inspire and develop others.
- A collaborative and analytical mindset with a passion for continuous improvement.
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Desirable (but not essential):
- Experience working in local government or regulatory partnerships.
- Expertise in using monitoring or modelling software for environmental health.
- A track record of contributing to strategic plans and NSIPs.
