The job itself

  • Hours of work: 4 hours per week term time, 12 hrs per week in college holiday times.
  • Days/Times: Term time: Saturdays or Sundays preferred but could be a regular weekday evening instead. Holidays: Weekdays, flexible and to be agreed flexibly at the time.
  • Rate of Pay: £13.00 - £13.50 employed workers / £18.00 per hour self-employed workers.

About the recipient

The individual is female, 18 years old and resides in Willerby. They are sociable, kind and funny, and require a dedicated, fun and suitable person to support them to get out and about and do activities they enjoy. They are unable to do this safely by themselves or independently with friends due to having a learning disability (Down Syndrome). Someone who can commit to the role to build a lasting relationship with this delightful individual is preferred.

They like/enjoy: Pop music, musical theatre, eating out, watching sport, shopping, social media, chatting to friends.

They don't like: dogs, friend fallouts, or sudden loud noises.

About the role

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Aiding the individual with financial budgeting.
  • Assisting the individual with accessing activities and spending time out in the community.
  • Attending/transporting the individual to social activities.
  • Encouraging social interaction and inclusion and providing emotional support.

A female worker is specifically required as the individual may need some prompting or verbal support and advice with toileting/menstruation hygiene from time to time that will require the worker to go into a ladies or disabled toilet with the individual (no hands-on personal care required).

Hours

There is some flexibility about when the hours can be used and family is open to discussion to make the role a success for all. However, the individual is out at college every weekday so the role will be for weekends or weekdays evenings. This is except for in college holidays, where weekdays will be required in addition and agreed with family/individual a little in advance of the time. The family is also open to interview candidates who can only do weekends and no school holiday work.

The suitable candidate must:

  • Be motivated, proactive and able to work on their own initiative.
  • Be patient, caring and understanding.
  • Have good communication skills (clear and effective communication).
  • Be able to build a positive relationship with the individual to both encourage and support them.
  • Be flexible to accommodate the hours of work where necessary.
  • Be flexible to accommodate the preferences of the supported individual in terms of activity.
  • Must be prepared to use public transport at times to transport individual to social activities and appointments, even if have own vehicle.
  • Have some prior knowledge or training about safeguarding.

DBS/Reference checks will be required for this post - Cost to be met by the local authority.
