We have an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our busy Trading Standards Service as a full-time Enforcement Officer, supporting our work to protect consumers and ensure a fair, safe and legal trading environment across the East Riding of Yorkshire.

As a Trading Standards Enforcement Officer, you will play a key role within the Fair Trading and Business Intelligence Team. The role covers a wide range of functions, including:

  • Promoting fair trading
  • Tackling doorstep crime and scams
  • Enforcing age-restricted sales legislation
  • Addressing illicit tobacco and vape activity
  • Responding to consumer complaints

Who We Are Looking For

Ideally, you will have previous Trading Standards experience and be fully or part qualified. However, we also welcome applicants with regulatory enforcement experience and a relevant Level 6 (or above) qualification in law, Environmental Health, or another related field. For the right candidate, we may also consider an apprenticeship route and provide the required training and development to become fully qualified. This would require a firm commitment to completing the apprenticeship programme, which is delivered predominantly through online learning.

About the Role

  • Work across Trading Standards and wider regulatory services within the Public Protection Group.
  • Provide a customer-focused, risk-based service to businesses and residents.
  • Investigate complaints, assess risk, manage evidence, and take proportionate enforcement action.
  • Provide advice and guidance to businesses and traders.
  • Assist and lead on trading standards initiatives to tackle priority areas.
  • Adapt quickly to varied situations, understanding risks, legal implications, and appropriate responses.
  • Collaborate with partners and other enforcement agencies.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required (time off in lieu provided).

What You Will Need

  • Experience of working in a front line regulatory service.
  • Effective communication, investigative and report writing skills.
  • PACE interview or investigative training would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Calm, positive can-do attitude with professionalism and sound judgement.
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • Access to a car for business use and willingness to travel across the East Riding.
  • Willingness to work outdoors when required.

Working Arrangements

We support flexible and blended working. The team meets in Hull on agreed office days, with home working and site visits forming part of the weekly routine. Occasional evening and weekend working may be required.
