The job itself

We are seeking a versatile Health & Safety Officer to join the Corporate Occupational Health and Safety Team. This is an excellent opportunity to build a robust breadth of experience as a health and safety professional in one of the largest local authorities in the country,

This role is varied. You could be helping to solve a problem involving penguins, undertaking corporate risk assurance and improvement work, or advising on safety management for a major infrastructure project.

You will report to the Occupational Health & Safety Manager, working within a team led by a Senior Health & Safety Officer. Alongside delegated project work, you will be expected to operate self-sufficiently.

This is a hybrid role where your time will be split between on-site, office based, and home-based working.

The Role

You will be responsible for providing health & safety advisory support to the authority's day-to-day operations, whilst also contributing towards strategy, projects, risk assurance, and initiatives.

Your duties will include:

  • Contributing to the development and execution of organisational wide risk assurance and control integrity programmes.
  • Supporting the design and integration of corporate safety frameworks, standards, processes, and procedures.
  • Facilitating the formulation and execution of physical and digital safety transformation projects.
  • Use organisational safety intelligence and data to identify key risk indicators and undertake proactive intervention aimed at preventing serious incidents.
  • Supporting services in the development and integration of safe systems of work, including risk assessments, procedures, inspection, training, and supervision.
  • Supporting services with incident investigation and root cause analysis and guide the development of improvement plans aimed at preventing recurrence.
  • Conducting general health & safety management work within service areas, including conducting audits, assessments and analysis, inspections, and reviews.
  • Establishing relationships with senior and operational leadership teams and supporting them with building long-term safety performance.
  • Engaging employees on day-to-day health and safety and helping to build a culture of psychological safety and safety critical thinking.
