Job overview:

The Trust is inviting applications for the role of HEMS Paramedic working with the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance and EEAST Operations. Successful applicants will be expected to cover HEMS bases located at North Weald (nr Harlow), Earls Colne (nr Colchester) and the Critical Care desk at the nearest Control room (Chelmsford, Norwich or Bedford). Please note, as a change to previous secondments, currently we are not able to offer the APCC pathway to successful applicants. As vacancies are confirmed these will be facilitated by a waiting list.

Successful applicants should also note the following assessments will be required:

  • Observation shift, where possible
  • Interview
  • Occupational Health Assessments
  • HEMS initial training
  • Pre-sign off mentorship and supervision period
  • Clinical Coordination Desk Training & Sign-off

Main duties of the job:

  • To work as a member of the Air Ambulance team utilising ground response vehicles or helicopters providing a primary enhanced care response to the scene of an incident and where necessary supporting safe in-transit care en-route to hospital, on behalf of the NHS ambulance service.
  • To work competently, under supervision where necessary and appropriate, in the role of the HEMS Paramedic, within the HCPC Standards of Conduct Performance and Ethics, and Standards of Proficiency, College of Paramedics competency and curriculum frameworks; and EEAST / Charity Standard Operating Procedures providing clinical care to critically ill or injured patients.
  • To undertake all required training, education and development activity in relation to the post and to meet the needs of the service.
  • To support the education and development of the wider clinical team.
  • The post holder will be required to participate in the staffing of the Critical Care Desk based in EOC, which may include (but not limited to) interrogation of calls and directing dispatch of critical care resources to the most appropriate incidents (air and land resources) and collating details on availability of critical care and specialist capacity within the region’s acute Hospital.

Positions are available at the following locations with the post holder being expected to operate from both sites in accordance with the agreed rota pattern: North Weald Airbase, CM16 6HR.

Person specification:

  • Education & Qualifications:
  • HCPC registered Paramedic with no outstanding cautions or conditions of practice
  • Hold a full UK driving licence with a maximum of 3 penalty points
  • IHCD emergency driving qualification or equivalent
  • BSc Paramedic Science (or equivalent) or evidence of completed study at FHEQ level 6 (BSc level)
  • ALS, APLS (or equivalent) provider status
  • Diploma in Immediate Medical Care of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
  • Mentoring/teaching/supervisory qualification or equivalent experience
  • JESIP Training
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of five years full-time patient-facing experience or provide evidence of other significant pre-hospital experience
  • Demonstrate ongoing post registration professional development across a range of clinical and non-clinical activities
  • Minimum of three years post-registration experience as a Paramedic
  • Able to demonstrate both leadership and teamwork in a highly complex environment
  • Participate in audit or quality improvement activities
  • AOC secondment/experience
  • Experience assisting/representing partner organisations at events or courses
  • LOM or other leadership experience
