Derbyshire County Council Highway Materials Laboratory has a vacancy for two enthusiastic technically minded individuals who are collaborative in working well with others within the Laboratory and our colleagues in Derbyshire County Council.

The principle work of the highways laboratory comprises the testing of materials used in the construction and maintenance of the County’s 5,300km highway network, which includes Asphalt, Aggregates, Soils, Concrete and Road Markings.

Responsibilities:
  • Support, oversee, manage and train Laboratory Technicians over a range of diverse projects, including Asphalt Resurfacing, Pavement Investigations and Surface Dressing programmes.
  • Carry out sampling and testing of highway materials and interpret and produce accurate technical reports for internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrate excellent staff management and communication skills, both written and verbal; be reliable and flexible, as weekend and night work may be required.
  • Travel across the County to visit road construction and civil engineering sites and quarries as work demands (UKAS Accredited Highways Laboratory in Ambergate).
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment calibration and maintenance and familiarity with principles, techniques and procedures associated with highway maintenance and construction works is desirable.
  • A UK Full Driving Manual Gearbox Licence is required.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Ability to interpret and produce accurate technical reports for clients (internally and externally).
