East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust requires a Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery for initially 12 months with the possibility of an extension. The post is based at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital, which are well-equipped modern hospitals with excellent facilities.

The successful applicant will assist in providing a clinical service in General Surgery to the population of East Lancashire and the adjoining areas. This will include supporting and undertaking outpatient clinics, operating lists, ward rounds, and being part of the Surgical Out of Hours Service (SOS) on-call rota.

The post holder will assist in providing a clinical service in elective and emergency General Surgery to the population of East Lancashire and the adjoining areas. This will include undertaking outpatient clinics, daytime operating lists, and out-of-hours emergency operating lists under the supervision of Consultants. The post holder may rotate through other specialist firms depending on service needs. The timetable will be fluid. The appointee will have the opportunity to operate independently within their competencies for specific procedures.

Working for our organization, the individual will join a highly motivated multidisciplinary team led by 16 Consultant General Surgeons, addressing the challenging demands of the specialty. Opportunities include assisting with major cases in General Surgery, on-call duties, and managing the Emergency Surgical Unit.

We cover the following:

  • Inpatient Elective (planned) – Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital.
  • Inpatient Emergency (Unplanned) – Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
  • Day Case (Same Day Service) – Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital & Burnley General Teaching Hospital.
  • Elective one-night stay – Burnley General Teaching Hospital.
  • Outpatients – Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, Burnley General Teaching Hospital, Clitheroe, and Rossendale.
  • Diagnostic – Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital.

The post holder will aim to deliver high-quality care with the help of the existing surgical team, share administrative duties, participate in the weekly on-call system, observe policies, and be involved in clinical audit and governance issues.

Qualifications required include MBChB or equivalent, MRCS or equivalent, and full GMC registration with a license to practice.

Desirable criteria include postgraduate thesis, clinical opinion, expertise in general surgery, experience to join the on-call rota, knowledge of evidence-based practice, teaching experience, research involvement, and publications.

Management skills required include organizing priorities, managing outpatient and operating lists, and leading emergency admissions. Appropriate UK professional registration is essential.
