East Kent Colleges Group are seeking to appoint a dynamic and ambitious Deputy Head of Department to join our thriving Engineering, Motor Vehicle and Computing team at EKC Canterbury College.
As Deputy Head, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the department and driving forward excellence in teaching, learning and student experience.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on Quality – Enhance teaching, learning and assessment standards across the department, ensuring consistently high outcomes.
  • Performance Management – Monitor key performance indicators, analyse data and implement swift, effective interventions where needed.
  • Team Leadership – Line manage and support staff, driving professional growth and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Curriculum Development – Support the design, review and implementation of innovative curriculum that reflects industry needs and future opportunities.
  • Strategic Implementation – Work closely with the Head of Department to deliver the strategic vision and quality improvement plan for the area.
  • Data Analysis – Scrutinise retention, achievement, attendance and student satisfaction data monthly, ensuring accuracy and implementing improvement strategies.
  • Student Experience – Champion an outstanding learning experience, ensuring the curriculum meets the needs of learners, employers, and the local community.

About You
We are seeking to appoint a highly organised and enthusiastic individual to work alongside the Head of Department to oversee the delivery of full time programmes of study and part time adult courses. You will have a proven track record of implementing high standards and improvement within a department.
You should have a strong background in education, a teaching qualification and experience delivering Engineering qualifications. They will ideally have experience of line managing a team or leading a team as the candidate will be responsible for completing staff appraisals, teaching and learning observations and staff one to one meetings and will line manage a team of lecturers and support staff.
You will have experience of a further education environment and supporting lecturing staff to deliver high quality teaching to young people and will be the first point of contact for the programme leaders when the Head of Department is off site.
