The Onshore General Site Manager acts as the onsite Client Representative during the site initial designs, constructability assessments, and planning of the works, preparing for site establishment and later construction of the Onshore Electrical Substation and associated onshore works. The role supports the HVDC Package Manager through the construction phase and manages all aspects of the Client’s site duties under the Contract, coordinating the Client Site Representatives and ensuring all site-related information is aligned across supporting functions.
Responsibilities
- Act as onsite Client Representative during initial design, constructability, and planning stages.
- Prepare for site establishment and construction of the Onshore Electrical Substation and associated works.
- Support the HVDC Package Manager and manage all site duties under the Contract.
- Coordinate Client Site Representatives and align site information across project functions.
- Facilitate resolution of site-based issues, mitigating employer risks through regular and ad-hoc meetings and thorough documentation.
- Represent and resolve site issues with Contractor’s Senior Management.
- Apply technical knowledge of civil engineering, HV mechanical & electrical installations, testing, and commissioning of HV systems and cables.
- Manage all onshore substation site activities, including health, safety, environment, security, and pre-handover maintenance.
- Familiarise with contracts, consent plans, leases, designs, the Health & Safety Plan, package interfaces, and employer requirements.
- Maintain relationships with key stakeholders such as National Grid, Associated Works Contractors, and client senior management.
- Coordinate all onshore client site resources, supported by engineers, quality inspectors, health & safety inspectors, environmental consultants, and consent personnel.
- Liaise with the Commissioning Manager responsible for HV Safety Rules.
- Support interface planning activities with National Grid and the Onshore Cables Team.
- Ensure Contractor fulfills duties of the Principal Contractor under CDM, including a safe system of work offshore, adherence to HV Safety Rules, and compliance with health, safety, quality and technical standards.
- Design and implement an effective handover process from construction and commissioning to O & M.
Deliverables
- Safe delivery of the electrical transmission system, including continued development, construction, handover to operations, closeout of commercial aspects, and delivery of all as-built documentation for all associated packages.
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or equivalent; high-level safety qualifications such as NEBOSH are an advantage.
- Extensive experience as a Site Manager on HV substation construction projects, with a proven track record in civil engineering and HV substation site construction management.
- Excellent understanding of civil engineering techniques, including HDD, with a practical approach to implementation.
- Proficient in English.
- Site-based role; expected to work at the specified site location.
Positions
- Position 1 – Base location: Necton Onshore Substation, Swaffham, Norfolk (PE37 8EG). Travel required to Swindon office, London Project Office, and Coventry Office as needed.
- Position 2 – Initial base location: London DBS offices, with subsequent transition to the Onshore Substation site (TBA) when site activities commence. Travel to London, Swindon, Coventry, or other locations as required.
