Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role for a Dispensing Optician / Optical Assistant based at our Taunton practice.

The role involves guiding patients in the selection of frames and lenses, taking accurate measurements, and ensuring optimal visual and cosmetic outcomes.

Daily tasks include dispensing prescriptions, adjusting and repairing spectacles, managing orders, and supporting the specilaist clinics.

The team member will provide friendly, knowledgeable customer service, support the optometrists with clinic flow, and help present and maintain the practice’s retail displays.

The role also includes contributing to a positive, efficient practice environment.

Qualifications

  • Relevant optical experience, ideally as a qualified Dispensing Optician (FBDO or equivalent), or experience as an Optical Assistant in a clinical or retail eye care setting.
  • Strong dispensing skills, including frame selection, lens advice (single vision, varifocal, specialist lenses), and precise measurements such as PDs and fitting heights.
  • Comfortable working in specialist environments (dry eye, glaucoma, contact lenses, macula clinics), with a willingness to learn about advanced eye care services and technologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain clinical information clearly, build patient rapport, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good organizational and administrative skills, including accurate record keeping, appointment management, and attention to detail when handling orders and prescriptions.
  • Customer service mindset, with a professional, empathetic approach and a commitment to high standards of care and patient experience.
  • Comfortable with basic IT systems (practice management software, email, digital ordering platforms), and able to adapt to new tools and processes.
  • Flexibility and reliability, with the ability to manage a varied workload, follow clinical and safety procedures, and contribute positively to practice growth.
  • Formal optical qualifications or registration with relevant professional bodies are desirable; ongoing professional development and training will be supported.
