A specialist insurance business is looking to appoint an experienced Marine Liability Claims Specialist to take ownership of a complex international claims portfolio, with a particular focus on Marine Liability and third-party claims. This is a senior technical claims role suited to someone who is already seen as a strong subject matter expert within Marine Liability and is confident handling complex, high-value and litigated claims with limited supervision. The successful candidate will play a visible role both internally and externally, working closely with underwriting, brokers, legal representatives, experts and market stakeholders. The role will suit someone who enjoys technical claims work, but also wants to be involved in relationship building, portfolio oversight, market engagement and supporting the continued development of a claims function.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing a portfolio of complex Marine Liability claims, including high-value and litigated matters.
- Handling third-party claims with confidence, technical accuracy and commercial judgement.
- Taking ownership of claim strategy, reserving, settlement negotiation and stakeholder communication.
- Acting as a technical referral point on complex claims and supporting less experienced members of the team.
- Building strong relationships with brokers, insureds, lawyers, loss adjusters, experts and wider market contacts.
- Working closely with underwriting and actuarial teams to provide claims insight, trend analysis and portfolio commentary.
- Attending broker, client, renewal and market meetings where claims input is required.
- Supporting the development of best practice across claims handling, reporting, reserving and internal processes.
- Identifying emerging issues, wording trends, portfolio concerns and wider market developments.
- Contributing to internal training, lessons learned sessions and knowledge sharing across claims and underwriting.
- Helping raise the profile of the business externally through strong market engagement and relationship management.
Requirements:
- Strong Marine Liability claims experience, ideally gained within the Lloyd’s or London Market.
- A proven background handling complex, high-value and/or litigated marine claims.
- Excellent third-party liability expertise.
- The ability to work independently and make sound claims decisions with appropriate escalation where needed.
- Experience engaging with brokers, lawyers, experts, coverholders, delegated authorities and senior internal stakeholders.
- Strong reserving, negotiation, claims strategy and technical analysis skills.
- Confidence contributing to portfolio reviews, underwriting discussions and claims trend analysis.
- A collaborative approach, with the ability to mentor, coach or support others.
- Experience with ECF and a strong understanding of London Market claims processes.
- ACII qualification, progress towards ACII, or equivalent market experience would be advantageous.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong Marine Liability claims professional who wants to take on a visible, externally facing role with real influence across claims, underwriting and the wider market.
