Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Maritime Data/Database Manager to lead our data research function, overseeing the delivery of high-quality data to internal stakeholders and external clients. This role will manage and mentor a small team of data researchers, ensuring robust data governance and quality, as well as supporting our internal and external analytics capability, and artificial intelligence initiatives. The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with management experience, acting as both a team leader and a hands-on data professional.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage, and develop a team of data researchers.
- Oversee the end-to-end delivery of data outputs, ensuring accuracy and consistency of service.
- Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Apply advanced SQL scripting to extract, transform, and optimise complex datasets.
- Provide subject-matter expertise in maritime data, ensuring data is accurate and representative of market and operational practices in the maritime domain.
- Act as a primary point of contact for data clients, responding to queries diligently.
- Establish and enforce best practices in data quality, documentation, and governance.
- Support continuous improvement of data processes, tools, and methodologies.
- Undertake business analysis as required, analysing both internal and external data sets to identify risks and opportunities in business performance, customer behaviour and market trends.
- Represent Gibson at the London Tanker Broker Panel meetings and present monthly/daily assessments.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Minimum 3 years’ leadership experience managing data, analytics, or research teams.
- Strong hands-on experience with Power BI, including data modelling and dashboard design.
- Advanced SQL scripting skills, with the ability to work with large and complex database systems.
- Demonstrated maritime data knowledge, including familiarity with maritime operations, markets, or regulatory contexts.
- Experience managing client relationships and delivering data to external customers.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data to non-technical audiences.
- Experience mentoring and developing analysts in a professional environment.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience working in data-driven, commercial, or consultancy-style environments.
- Experience in a business analyst role.
- Knowledge of additional analytics or data platforms (e.g. Azure, cloud data tools).
- Exposure to strategic planning or senior-level reporting.
