The Electrical Design Engineer will be part of the ICP design team, with particular emphasis on Low Voltage (LV) to 132 kV projects. This position entails producing a comprehensive design package for both DNO-contestable and private projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Substation and Cable Design (LV-132kV): Responsible for the design of high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage (EHV) underground cable circuits, substation layouts (both Air Insulated Substation (AIS) and Gas Insulated Substation (GIS)), as well as protection and control schemes.
  • Technical Specifications: Generate detailed specifications for primary plant equipment, which includes transformers, switchgear, protection relays, current transformers (CTs), and voltage transformers (VTs).
  • Engineering Calculations: Conduct load flow studies, short‐circuit calculations, cable sizing, earthing design in accordance with BS 7430, and protection studies.
  • DNO/IDNO Liaison: Prepare design submissions and manage the approval process with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs), ensuring compliance with G81, G99, and other relevant ENA standards.
  • Drafting: Generate detailed General Arrangement (GA) drawings, single‐line diagrams (SLDs), and wiring diagrams utilising AutoCAD software.
  • Modelling: Employ software tools such as CDEGS or XGSLab for earthing studies, Digisilent PowerFactory for power system analyses, and Windebut or VisNet for low voltage modelling.
  • Project Lifecycle Support: Assist project managers with tenders, cost estimates, site assessments, and revisions to design during the construction phase.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree level qualification (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering/Power Systems, or an HNC/HND with substantial relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in LV/EHV design, including experience with 33kV and 132kV infrastructure.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD; familiarity with power system software such as PowerFactory, CDEGS.
  • Solid understanding of IEC/BS standards and ENA Recommendations, Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) regulations, and DNO/National Grid network design standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for client‐facing interactions and technical report documentation.
  • Proficient in delivering innovative design solutions under stringent project timelines.
  • Capacity to manage multiple concurrent projects from the tender phase through to final design approval.
