Key responsibilities
The Graduate Apprentice Building Surveyor role is a full-time, on-site position based in our Inverness office.
The role involves assisting senior surveyors with building surveys, condition surveys, and feasibility studies across a variety of property types, as well as design and specification of construction works, procurement and project delivery.
Daily tasks include supporting senior surveying staff with surveys, preparing reports, helping manage construction works, and contributing to project documentation and compliance.
You will liaise with internal teams and clients, gather and analyse technical information, and help ensure that projects are delivered to agreed quality, time, and budget standards.
The position includes structured training and mentoring to support professional development and progression toward chartered status.
The successful candidate will learn the core skills required to work towards becoming a Chartered Building Surveyor.
This will include the following
- Technical & Construction Knowledge: Learning how buildings are constructed, diagnosing structural defects (like damp or cracks), and designing repairs using CAD/BIM software.
- Surveys & Inspections: Conducting physical inspections, accurately measuring properties, and recording a building’s condition.
- Legal & Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring properties meet building, fire, and health regulations, navigating planning permissions, and understanding property/lease law.
- Project & Contract Management: Managing construction projects, administering contracts, budgeting, and ensuring site safety.
- Sustainability & Energy Efficiency: Assessing a building’s carbon footprint and learning how to retrofit older properties with green technologies.
- Professional & Soft Skills: Writing clear technical reports for clients, offering property advice, and preparing to pass the RICS assessment to become a Chartered Surveyor.
Skills or qualifications required
- You must meet the minimum requirements for entry on to the Graduate Apprentice course – SQA Higher BBBC.
- You will show a strong interest in the built environment and a career in Surveying and willingness to complete degree level education and ongoing professional development.
- Willingness to learn from and support Senior Staff with surveying and report writing.
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Organisational skills to manage tasks, meet deadlines, and prioritise workload under supervision.
- Basic IT proficiency, including MS Office and willingness to learn sector-specific software.
