Location: Farnborough (onsite 5 days per week)

We're looking for an experienced Applications Architect to join our Digital Applications Transformation team. This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in complex transformation programmes. You'll work at the heart of major business and technology change initiatives, partnering with architects, engineers and business leaders to design solutions that deliver real value. Whether you're helping modernise core mainframe platforms, defining enterprise-wide architecture roadmaps, or guiding development teams through delivery, you'll be instrumental in shaping the future of our clients' technology ecosystems.

The Applications Architect is responsible for defining, designing, and governing application architectures that align with business objectives, ensuring scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions that support enterprise application strategy and digital transformation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Application Architecture Strategy
    • Define and maintain the target application architecture and roadmap aligned with business goals.
    • Develop application reference architectures, frameworks, and design principles.
    • Lead application portfolio rationalization (consolidation, decommissioning, modernization).
  • Application Design & Integration
    • Design scalable, modular, and reusable application architectures.
    • Define integration patterns (API-led, event-driven, middleware) across systems.
    • Ensure seamless interaction between core systems, third-party applications, and digital platforms.
  • Governance & Standards
    • Establish architecture standards, guidelines, and best practices for application development.
    • Lead architecture review boards and ensure compliance with enterprise standards.
    • Maintain application architecture documentation and repository.
  • Modernization & Transformation
    • Drive legacy application modernization initiatives (rehost, refactor, replace).
    • Promote adoption of cloud-native and microservices-based architectures.
    • Enable digital transformation through modern application platforms.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration
    • Partner with business stakeholders, product owners, and delivery teams to translate requirements into application solutions.
    • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on application strategy and investments.
    • Collaborate with infrastructure, data, and security architects for holistic solutions.
  • Delivery Oversight
    • Provide architectural guidance to solution architects and engineering teams.
    • Review and approve application designs for key programs and initiatives.
    • Ensure alignment between design, development, and deployment practices.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong experience in application architecture and system design.
  • Strong experience in Apps Migration projects from current incumbent to new service providers.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise application architecture and design patterns.
  • Experience in system integration and modernisation approaches.
