Michell Instruments is part of DwyerOmega, a group dedicated to providing precision sensing instrumentation to industrial customers around the world. The group has 13 R&D/manufacturing sites globally in addition to subsidiary offices in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

We are looking for a Research Scientist focused on sensors to cover maternity leave. You will bring your knowledge of thin-film deposition techniques and their characterisation to a multi-disciplinary research team furthering our sensing technology to fulfil the requirements of emerging applications in gas treatment and renewable energy.

Reporting to the Head of Research & Development, you will be responsible for:

  • Hands on contributions to the development of our measurement technologies.
  • Design and test improvements that will achieve the desired performance.
  • Reporting and disseminating findings to members of the team.
  • Collaborate with the engineering and development teams to transform research outputs into New Product Developments.
  • Assessment of obstacles and technical hurdles to the product success, including manufacturability.
  • Provide technical expertise and training to other members of the team.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics.
Skills & ExperienceEssential:
  • Experience of all main PVD techniques including evaporation & sputtering.
  • Characterisation of thin films including understanding of material properties of thin films and their importance when used in multilayer devices.
  • Experience of sensors and their associated signal processing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Comfortable in the use of mathematics.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of complex technical issues and develop cross functional relationships.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities, with a logical approach to implementation.
  • Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences.
Desirable:
  • Development of PVD processes for manufacturing lines.
  • Experience in product research & development or related environment.
  • Experience in design or implementation of sensing techniques.
  • Application of physics / materials science and or electronics to measurement science.
