Michell Instruments is part of DwyerOmega, a group dedicated to providing precision sensing instrumentation to industrial customers around the world. The group has 13 R&D/manufacturing sites globally in addition to subsidiary offices in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
We are looking for a Research Scientist focused on sensors to cover maternity leave. You will bring your knowledge of thin-film deposition techniques and their characterisation to a multi-disciplinary research team furthering our sensing technology to fulfil the requirements of emerging applications in gas treatment and renewable energy.
Reporting to the Head of Research & Development, you will be responsible for:
- Hands on contributions to the development of our measurement technologies.
- Design and test improvements that will achieve the desired performance.
- Reporting and disseminating findings to members of the team.
- Collaborate with the engineering and development teams to transform research outputs into New Product Developments.
- Assessment of obstacles and technical hurdles to the product success, including manufacturability.
- Provide technical expertise and training to other members of the team.

- Experience of all main PVD techniques including evaporation & sputtering.
- Characterisation of thin films including understanding of material properties of thin films and their importance when used in multilayer devices.
- Experience of sensors and their associated signal processing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Comfortable in the use of mathematics.
- Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of complex technical issues and develop cross functional relationships.
- Creative problem-solving abilities, with a logical approach to implementation.
- Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences.
- Development of PVD processes for manufacturing lines.
- Experience in product research & development or related environment.
