Reporting to the Head of Service, the Plant Manager will manage a Food Anaerobic Digestion operational site to achieve contractual, Health & Safety, financial, customer, and performance targets while ensuring compliance with all environmental and regulatory requirements. The Plant Manager will also oversee an operational team and ensure assets operate at optimal efficiency within agreed budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of the Food Anaerobic Plant and deliver business performance inline or exceeding the business plan.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental, emission, planning, maintenance and permitting plans.
  • Uphold contractual, health and safety, environmental, APHA and WWOE company standards and maintain audit compliance with standards 9:001, 14:001, 45001 and PAS110.
  • Lead and support the operational team, set challenging targets, monitor performance, report variances to senior management and contractual stakeholders.
  • Provide advice and guidance on emergency incidents or contingency plans.
  • Control total cost of service and demonstrate real efficiencies in monthly meetings with senior management and contractual stakeholders, including NRW reporting.
  • Oversee planned and reactive maintenance, manage contractors (MoC) to ensure MEI tasks are completed on time and in line with best practice, and review statutory maintenance plans.
  • Plan and manage operational capacity of team resources, ensuring available capacity is maximised and fully utilised.
  • Represent the company during incidents with external agencies such as emergency services, EHO and local government.
  • Take the lead on managing contractors on site and provide guidance under Management of Contractors when needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • A degree level qualification, or equivalent, in engineering or science.
  • Commercial approach to cost efficiency and leading large‑scale change programmes.
  • Experience managing an operational team.
  • Experience working in the Water, Waste or Energy sectors.
  • Experience with Anaerobic Digestion technology.
  • Experience managing contractors under contract.
  • Strategic thinking with a focus on effective day‑to‑day operations.
  • Aware of economic, environmental, social and political factors that may impact the job, able to assess impacts and seize opportunities to optimise effectiveness.

  • The role is site based, requiring participation in a standby rota.
  • A full UK driver’s licence is required.
