What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
- Portfolio Frameworks & Continuous Improvement – Demonstrates experience in developing and improving portfolio frameworks, processes, and controls. Proven ability to drive continuous improvement in prioritisation, tracking, and reporting, embedding consistent ways of working and ensuring alignment with agreed portfolio standards.
- Delivery Oversight & Issue Resolution – Strong ability to anticipate and identify delivery risks or early warning signs across complex delivery landscapes. Takes decisive action to resolve issues, maintain momentum, and protect outcomes.
- Data Analysis & Decision-Making – Skilled in applying a range of data analysis tools and techniques to interpret portfolio data independently. Experienced in visualising data insights and communicating recommendations clearly to senior technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Relationship Management & Influence – Demonstrates ability to build and maintain successful relationships across organisational boundaries. Uses strong leadership and communication skills to manage and influence diverse senior stakeholders and strategic relationships.
- Professional Accreditation – Holds a recognised Portfolio or Programme Management qualification such as Management of Portfolios (Practitioner), P3O, MSP, or PMI.
You and your role
We are looking for a Senior Digital Portfolio Manager to oversee a portfolio of digital projects that support DWP's strategic goals. This is a key leadership role where you will shape high-value initiatives, drive effective prioritisation, and provide visibility and insight to enable informed decision-making across our organisation. You will develop clear roadmaps, and guide teams through planning and assurance. You will bring together delivery, financial, architectural, and service insights to mitigate risk and maintain momentum. You will manage multiple workstreams, unblock issues quickly, and oversee governance activities, ensuring quality assurance and Board-level decisions are implemented effectively. You will also identify and manage inter-project dependencies to reduce risk and keep delivery on track. As a proactive and visible leader, you will inspire your team, foster a culture of excellence, and embed best practices in portfolio management. You will contribute to our wider portfolio and digital communities through recruitment, coaching, and standard setting.
Location
You will join us in one of our brilliant digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield, whichever is most convenient for you.
Hybrid Working
We work a hybrid model – you will spend some time working at home and some time collaborating face to face in a hub.
Pay & Benefits
- Pay: Competitive pay of up to £68,205.
- Pension: Brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions worth 28.97%.
- Holidays: A generous leave package starting at 26 days rising to 31 days over time. You can also take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi-time. You will also get all the usual public holidays.
