Are you a Software Engineer who wants to build complete, end-to-end solutions that genuinely make a difference? Join The Garage, DWP Digital's strategic automation team, where you'll design and deliver modern automation solutions that improve services relied on by millions of people across the UK. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll take ownership of features and work within a collaborative scrum team to build high-quality, scalable software. You'll be part of a team that has already delivered over 75 automation solutions and processed more than 50 million transactions. Working with modern cloud technologies, APIs and emerging AI capabilities, you'll help shape how DWP continues to transform services for citizens. This is an opportunity to do meaningful engineering at scale, in an environment that encourages innovation, ownership, and continuous learning.

What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?

  • Experience building cloud-based applications using JavaScript or TypeScript (for example Node.js)
  • Experience working with modern frameworks like React, Next.js or Express to build user interfaces or services
  • Experience using AWS services (such as Lambda, S3 or API Gateway) and working with databases
  • Experience adding automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to ensure code is reliable and maintainable
  • Experience working as part of an agile team delivering software

You and your role

As a Software Engineer you'll design and build complete features that form part of modern automation solutions used across DWP. You won't just contribute small pieces - you'll take ownership of functionality from design through to delivery, ensuring it is reliable, scalable and fit for real-world use. Much of your work will focus on building solutions from the ground up. This could include developing agent-facing web applications, automating case processing, or creating intelligent systems that triage and manage communications. You'll work with cloud-native technologies and APIs, while also applying automation approaches such as RPA where legacy systems require it. You'll be part of a highly collaborative environment, working closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Test Engineers to understand problems and deliver the right solutions. Alongside this, you'll contribute to code reviews, improve engineering practices, and support junior engineers through mentoring and knowledge sharing. The Garage is a team that values innovation, continuous improvement and shared learning. You'll have the space to contribute to technical design discussions, experiment with emerging technologies like AI, and help shape how modern automation is delivered at scale across government. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on development, takes pride in building quality software, and wants to see the real-world impact of their work. If you're motivated by solving meaningful problems and delivering solutions that improve services for millions of people, this is a great place to do it.
