The Switchgear Controls Engineer (also known as Power Systems Engineer) collaborates with Engineers, DVL Sales, Program Management, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and end-user customers. The role involves utilizing prior experience to oversee the entire integrated power systems engineering project from conception to completion.

WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING

  • Overseeing an integrated electrical controls project from start to finish, including:

Working with the Sales Engineer to define & budget the project

Refining budget costs post-closing to match actual projected costs

Developing submittal drawings as required

Coordinating with outside switchgear vendors (e.g., General Electric, Square D, DVM)

Providing schematics for control design, wiring on secondary sides of PTs, CPTs, breakers, relays, generator control devices, power supplies, PLCs, networking, annunciation, control switches, etc.

Setting up & programming PLC control & redundancy logic, HMI graphics and pages

Applying & interfacing Woodward Generator control devices with PLCs

Applying & interfacing protective relay devices (SEL, GE, Schneider, Bender, Basler) with PLCs

Overseeing construction, writing sequences of operations, factory & field test scripts

Participating in site & construction meetings, running factory witness tests

Performing field checks, startup, commissioning, training, and ongoing service

  • Constructing control panels, modifying field wiring with quality workmanship
  • Performing startup, maintenance & troubleshooting of ATSs and control systems
  • Setting up protective relaying for generator and utility operations
  • Operating and applying UPS equipment, performing load bank tests, infrared imaging, and power quality analysis
  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY

    • Several years of relevant experience, ideally with switchgear manufacturers, generator dealers, or control system providers
    • Hands-on controls design or field experience preferred
    • BS degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering field (Electrical Power Engineering preferred)
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Promis.e
    • Understanding of electrical generation, distribution, and control systems, including NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA safety standards
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office
    • Willingness to learn IT/server network setup for control systems
    • Experience with GE and/or Allen Bradley PLCs, Woodward controls, protection & control products, SCADA systems
    • Valid driver’s license

    The salary range is $97,000 – $135,000/year, plus car allowance and bonus based on experience.
