We are seeking an experienced Senior Freight Coordinator to manage inbound freight operations within our retail supply chain. This role is responsible for ensuring the timely, cost-effective movement of merchandise from suppliers (local and international) to distribution centres. The Senior Freight Coordinator will play a critical role in maintaining stock availability, minimising delays, controlling transport costs, and ensuring compliance with import/export regulations.
Responsibilities
- Freight & Logistics Management
- Coordinate domestic and international shipments (air, sea, and road) for retail merchandise
- Manage inbound shipments from suppliers to distribution centres
- Oversee container planning, booking, and tracking to ensure on-time delivery
- Monitor shipment milestones and proactively resolve delays to prevent stock shortages
- Supplier & Carrier Management
- Liaise with suppliers, freight forwarders, shipping lines, transporters, and customs brokers
- Evaluate Freight Forwarder performance and service levels
- Maintain strong working relationships with logistics partners
- Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure accurate preparation and review of shipping documents (commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, customs entries, delivery notes)
- Ensure compliance with import/export regulations and customs requirements
- Monitor adherence to Incoterms and Supplier shipping terms
- Cost Control & Reporting
- Track freight spend against budget
- Review and approve freight invoices, identifying discrepancies
- Identify cost-saving opportunities within the supply chain
- Inventory & Operations Support
- Work closely with buying, planning, and warehouse teams to align freight schedules with stock requirements
- Support seasonal demand planning and peak trading periods
- Minimise demurrage, detention, and storage costs
- Collaboration and Communication
- Co-ordinate with other departments (e.g., merchandising, finance and operations) to ensure smooth operations
- Communicate effectively with upper management to report operational progress and challenges
- Serve as a point of contact for any escalated freight issues or concerns from the operations team and resolve as needed
