Teaching Fellow in Ethics and Political Philosophy

Grade and Salary: Grade 7 – £38,784 per annum

Contract: Fixed‑term, full time, 12‑month contract

Key Responsibilities:

• Teach modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including lectures, seminars and discussion groups, covering Ethics and Values, Political Philosophy and contemporary issues.
• Develop, plan and design teaching materials and assessment tasks, demonstrating awareness of diverse teaching approaches and supporting student learning.
• Collaborate with colleagues on module design and contribute to courses led by others.
• Lead an inclusive curriculum and actively contribute to an inclusive community that celebrates diversity.
• Seek and incorporate feedback on teaching and engage in continuous professional development (CPD).
• Supervise undergraduate students and, where appropriate, participate in PhD supervisory teams.
• Engage in scholarly activities such as developing online resources and contributing to departmental committees.
• Provide student support, assess academic performance, and handle disciplinary matters and complaints.
• Undertake any administrative role assigned by the Head of Department and foster a collegial, respectful working environment.
• Represent the department in wider citizenship activities and maintain compulsory student mentorship when required.
• Attend relevant training and development courses to support ongoing learning.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

• Good honours degree in Philosophy or a closely related subject.
• PhD (or near submission) in Philosophy or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrable professional experience and/or membership of a relevant professional body.

Experience & Skills:

• Mandatory: teaching and examining experience at university level with positive student feedback, particularly in contemporary ethics, applied ethics.
• Developing and delivering high‑quality teaching and assessment, including designing learning environments and curricula.
• Management of student supervision, whether one‑to‑one or in team settings.
• Evidence of scholarly activity (e.g., publications, conference presentations, professional memberships) and commitment to ongoing learning (e.g., coaching, supervision, training).
• Professorial enthusiasm for teaching methods, including mastery of technology‑enhanced teaching and inclusive pedagogy.
• Adherence to university values and the staff code of conduct.
